The “Big Three”

I’ve been lucky enough to wander through Africa a few times, and let me tell you, whenever my hosts mention “Safari,” I’m all in. On these adventures, my eyes are glued to the horizon, hoping to spot one of the famous “Big Five”! Lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and African buffaloes—these majestic creatures are the holy grail of any African Safari. And guess what? I’ve been blessed to see all of them! Though, most times, you’re over the moon if you catch sight of two or three. Elephants are like the regulars, and African buffaloes? They’re like the VIP guests. Rhinos? Kind of like the shy ones who still show up. Leopards? Well, if you spot one, consider yourself the chosen one.

But among The Big Five, the undisputed champion is the lion. It’s the rockstar everyone’s dying to see and guides practically do cartwheels if they spot one. So yeah, while all these animals are incredible, it’s the lion that steals the show every time.

Now, let’s talk global compassion. It’s a bit like sorting through a buffet of urgent needs, isn’t it? There’s so much to tackle, from human trafficking to education and climate change. But for now, let’s zoom in on what I like to call the “Big Three”: water, food, and shelter. No arguments here—clean water, a belly full of healthy meals, and a roof over your head are non-negotiables. But here’s the kicker: which one’s the MVP? Water’s a no-brainer; we can’t survive long without it. Food’s next in line because, well, hunger waits for no one. And both can be sorted out relatively quickly and without breaking the bank. But shelter? Ah, there’s the rub. Homes don’t grow on trees, and building one requires time, money, and a whole lot of elbow grease. But does that mean we shove it to the bottom of the pile? Absolutely not.

Now, picture this: What if every family we fed had a cozy spot to cook and eat those meals? What if they could fetch clean water right from their doorstep, without worrying about contamination? And what if their shelter wasn’t just a roof over their heads but a launchpad for brighter futures? That’s what home means to us at Hope and Horizons—the ultimate game-changer. And guess what? We’re not just dreaming it; we’re making it happen, one family at a time.
