What Is Family?

During my most recent trip to Ukraine, I found myself asking that question again and again.

Over the last week, I had the chance to visit six of the families who have received homes through Hope and Horizons. We talked about their work, how culture has shifted during the war, and how their communities are rebuilding.

One moment I’ll never forget: the Demchenko family invited us to sing Happy Birthday to their daughter — her very first birthday. They reminded me that I’ve been part of her life since before she was born.

That’s what family is.

Then came another milestone — we handed the keys to the Shkabura family, marking yet another home filled with warmth, safety, and a new future. This incredible moment was made possible through the sacrificial generosity of Endurance Church and Hope City Church — whose partnership and faith in action provided the funds to get the Shkaburas into their new home.

Every story, every conversation, every hug reminded me that family extends far beyond borders or last names. It’s about being part of one another’s history and future.

While in Lutsk, I also had the privilege of preaching in Ukraine for the very first time — an unforgettable experience. Standing among people who have endured so much, I spoke about hope that doesn’t fade and faith that outlasts hardship. It was humbling, and it affirmed that Hope and Horizons’ mission isn’t only about homes — it’s about hearts.

This is what family is all about. And it’s possible because of you.

Your prayers, your generosity, your partnership — they’re building homes, restoring dignity, and giving families hope for a better day.

Every time we hand over keys, it’s more than a door unlocking — it’s a story continuing.

Thank you for helping us write these stories of hope.
